Amachi began as a national program in 2000 to serve children of incarcerated parents. Statistically, without intervention, children impacted by parental incarceration are 70% more likely to end up in jail themselves. Since 2004, thousands of Lexington’s youth impacted by parental incarceration and substance abuse disorder have been matched with a caring adult mentor.

Amachi Lexington believes mentorship looks a lot like genuine friendship and that every young person deserves to have a caring adult to talk to, trust and ‘do life life with.’ Proverbs 22:6 serves as a foundational guide to our work, “Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old he will not depart from it.”

Why Amachi?

98,000 youth in Kentucky have an incarcerated parent; this staggering fact places Kentucky 3rd in the country for highest percentage of children with an incarcerated parent.
