A number of years ago, LLF helped establish New Life Day Center (NLDC) in downtown Lexington. We convened several service providers for the homeless and transient community to ask the question, “what can we do together better than we can separately?” Through developing relationships with one another we discovered that people enduring homelessness and transiency in our city could greatly benefit from having “a place to belong” during the day wherein people could be resourced in a variety of ways. NLDC opened in 2011 as a result, and in the first year over 1,100 people were served on site.

 

Primarily, my role involved developing friendships with our guests and creating discipleship opportunities through prayer, worship, and Bible study. I’ll never forget, the very first person I connected with was James Newton. A few weeks later he came with me on a Sunday morning when I was the guest preacher at Open Door Church. I introduced him to their pastor, and for the next 10+ years James was deeply embraced in Christ community at Open Door, he even worked as the church custodian for many years. For more than a decade also, James attended The Lighthouse Ministries where I preach throughout the month.
